iHome App-Enhanced Alarm Clock with Bluetooth and FM Radio for iPad, iPhone and iPod
Review by Mark A. Peskin : Mostly good product with a few serious flaws 3 Star

Generally does what it says. Looks nice. Alarm functionality is solid and radio reception is strong. Excellent sound for an alarm clock, although mediocre by dedicated speaker-dock standards in this price range. Bluetooth stereo works well, but bluetooth device control via the iHome sleep app does not work consistently - I frequently power-cycle the bluetooth on my iPhone to re-establish a connection.

Here's a big caveat, and the reason this device gets three stars rather then four from me: iHome did not do a good job establishing unique infrared remote codes for this product. In my bedroom, along with the iA100, I have a media setup that includes both an Yamaha receiver and a mac mini that I use as an HTPC (mostly running Plex). So far I have found:

1) The "Power On" command for the Yamaha receiver interferes with the "Power" command for the iA100
2) The Apple Remote for the mini interferes with the "Sleep" and "Snooze" commands.

Having the iA100 turn on every time I fire up the receiver is a pain, and while I can control the Mac mini through other means the interference with the Apple Remote is especially baffling for an Apple-centric product like the iHome. In any event, have some caution if you intend to use this product in a room with other infrared-controlled devices!

Review by M. Castronova : IHOME makes a great product 5 Star

Only because of the reviews did I take the leap of faith and order this for my husband for Christmas. I ordered it to go along with the IPAD that was also his gift. The sound is outrageously great. The IPAD sits nicely on top. It was more than I wanted to spend, but the quality has made this decision a great one.

iHome App-Enhanced Alarm Clock with Bluetooth and FM Radio for iPad, iPhone and iPod
Review by SoCal_C : Weak by itself, better with iOS (June 2011 update) 3 Star

Update: July 2011
After another month with the iA100 I would not purchase this unit again. My review bellow stands, but there continues to be issues with the reliability of the hardware alarms, as well as the software based iOS app solution. For the price I just don't believe there is much value in this unit.

Original Review:
I've now had the iA100 for two months. Until yesterdays iHome App update and subsequent firmware update for the hardware it was a rather cumbersome experience. Alarms did not work all the time for non-apparent reasons. But here is where things stand now and my review of this device as of the latest updates and testing.

First, be aware of what you're getting here. From a hardware standpoint the iA100 is outwardly a very simple rudimentary dual alarm clock-radio, that also has an iPhone/iPod/iPad dock connector for charging and playing music for one iOS device at a time. Alarm setting and enabling via the hardware is only accessible on the rear of the device with small black buttons. This means that it is very hard to see an access these basic features without fully being able to turn the device around and nearly upside down.

From an audio quality stand point, I'm very happy with it for it's size and what this is intended for, I think it succeeds here very well.

Where the iA100 comes into it's own is when utilized with the latest version of the iHome iOS App. If you don't intend to always have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad docked to this at night then I honestly don't think this is the best product choice. The greatest flexibility in managing alarms, wake up settings, and sleep setting are only available when an iOS device is connected. The reason for this is that the iOS device is really doing all the work as an "alarm clock", and thus the iA100 is used as an external speaker and hardware snooze/wake/sleep & control buttons.

The iA100 has three long thin buttons up front. Moving left to right is the sleep button, snooze button, and wake button. This is actually a really annoying "feature" at times. It is easy to hit the "wake" button when you are reaching for the "snooze" button in an early morning sleepy haze. This has the wonderful effect of turning off the alarm session and allowing you to go back to a long uninterrupted slumber. This can be rather unfortunate if you really needed to start your morning. On at least three occasions in the last two months I have managed to hit this wake button. I think this is a poorly thought out design that probably seemed good on paper while caffeinated and working on next years big products. This also brings me to the whole "sleep" & "wake" functionality. Until the most recent update, the sleep functionality was erratic for some of my alarms in-spite of the in app settings. It seemed very hit and miss. Now it seems to be stabilized.

Overall the iA100 is an interesting device that when always used with an iOS device is pretty powerful. But this is a clock-radio or alarm clock first and foremost, and unfortunately iHome has chosen to relegate those basic functions to the back of the device in a very inconvenient location. If you are using the iA100 with an iOS device the downside is that you really need to have the iHome app running to ensure that custom alarms execute when they should. This can be an issue if say you need to respond to an email or text message after already in bed and "asleep." If you don't remember to reopen the iHome app there is a potential to have your custom alarm not go off. The solution is to use one of the two built in alarms, but those don't have the same flexibility. I do like the iA100 quite a bit, but I'm not sure that given the price I would purchase it again.

iHome App-Enhanced Alarm Clock with Bluetooth and FM Radio for iPad, iPhone and iPod
Review by videogal : Disappointing 3 Star

I had been holding off on getting an alarm clock that will also charge my iphone and play music off my iphone because of all the negative reviews. I took a chance on this product and regret it.
I was specifically looking for an alarm clock that could be dimmed all the way to black and had 2 alarms that could be set: one for weekdays and one for weekneds. This one does that, however, my weekend alarm never goes off even though it's set to ON. You HAVE to set the alarm using your phone, which is a pain in the neck. Also, it's not easy to tell if the alarm is set by looking at the clock itself. It is hard to determine what the volume of the alarm will be when it actually goes off in the morning too. Then, to top it all off, this thing is bluetooth ennabled, but any time I take my phone out of the bedroom, and return, I have to make it forget the device and re-pair the stupid thing. What a pain.

On the good side, it sounds great when playing music through it.

I'm packing the stupid thing up and sending it back. When you pay $200 for something, you don't expect to have this many issues with it. My trusty old alarm clock will be returned to service at my bedside.

iHome App-Enhanced Alarm Clock with Bluetooth and FM Radio for iPad, iPhone and iPod
Review by Michelle Vasquez : Good as a multi-device speaker dock 4 Star

I first purchased the Altec Lansing Octiv rotating dock for my iPad. I wanted a dock that would recharge and let me play music while in the kitchen. I also wanted it to be useable with my iPhone 4, and my kids 3d and 4th generation iPod Touches. I returned the Octiv because not only did I have to take the iPad cover off every time, but I couldn't dock the iPhone or iTouch 4th with even the slimmest case attached. Not worth the trouble.....totally defeated the purpose for me.

So, the iHome, while expensive, performs just like it says it will. The sound isn't the best (I'd prefer a deeper sound with more bass) but it's good enough overall. The remote works with all our devices, and most importantly, I can leave the cases on the iPad/iTouch. It has a large volume range. It is also small enough that I can slide it into a cupboard when it isn't in use. The connector for the iPad can pivot so you can gently rotate it a bit forward, which makes docking the iPad easy. The display also has several brightness settings. I'm not a fan of the blocky number display, but since I'm not using it as an alarm clock it doesn't really matter. I did try out all the features (alarms, time sync, bluetooth and the free sleep/alarm app) and they all work well.

Overall I am pleased with it. Would prefer something a little less expensive, since I don't really need all the features, but with limited choices for the iPad right now this seems the best.

iHome App-Enhanced Alarm Clock with Bluetooth and FM Radio for iPad, iPhone and iPod
Review by jj : Product worked but has an important limitation that prevented me from keeping it 3 Star

The short version of my review is that the device worked as documented, was very simple to set up, sounded very good and performed the functions it claimed to with no problems. My test only ran for about 24 hours however before I returned it so I cannot speak to how long the product lasts. My particular problem was that when my iPhone 4 was docked, text messages did not alert audibly; they only vibrated the phone. While working through this problem I contacted iHome customer service by phone, spoke to someone right away who was knowledgeable enough for level 1 and when she did need to ask engineering a question, I was on hold no more than 45 seconds before she came back and I got an answer (not the one I wanted unfortunately). Therefore, I rate their customer service very high. Apple on the other hand was horrible (no real surprised there). I would give the product 4 stars but it just doesn't seem right considering I had to return it.Sound quality was very good for a relatively small device. Display was also good and I liked the fact that it could be made very dim (or even turned off) easily. Button access was fine for me and the blue tooth speaker phone was a nice extra. It felt solid and decently constructed to me as well. I tested it with my phone paired via bluetooth and just docked (without pairing). Everything worked as expected. The iHome+sleep app worked as well and was very simple to setup. Fairly intuitive (although there are a few confusing settings). All in all, I liked the clock and would have kept it if it weren't for the silent text alerts. I have to support systems over night so I need to get woken up when I get text alerts. According to iHome, this is a deficiency with IOS when docking devices and not their product. According to them, all similar devices have this same deficiency (I'm not sure if I believe that). As for the value, I do think it's a tad overpriced for what you get; Still, there aren't many directly competing products at wildly different price points so I was ok with the number. I do think $150-$160 would be better, though.Apple phone support was absolutely useless. Not only was the cust service rep very poor with his English language skills (took about 45 seconds to give him my serial number (and that was also trying with the NATO phonetic alphabet) but he gave me all the standard lines and pushed me to buy Apple products (I pretty much expected that call to go nowhere). I did drop by an Apple store near where I live and the 2 out of 3 of the "geniuses" (yea, I use that term sarcastically) said it should not be a problem (there was a quorum at least). They do sell three 3rd party clocks similar to this but they were so crowded I didn't want to hang out and try right then (too long a wait). At some point I'll give it a try and see if what the iHome people told me is actually true. And of course, Amazon's delivery time was only 2 days (I'm an Amazon Prime customer) and the return process was both easy and quick. I continue to be very happy with the shopping experience I have on Amazon.
